There are a number of particular words used by the current Government (and its tabloid enablers) that absolutely do match the same words used in 1930's Germany. This practice is in itself harmful and shameful.Īnd Lineker's very specific observation about language is correct. I don't think any reasonable person believes it either.īut the issue here is one of 'othering' and deliberately blaming voiceless minorities for a country's economic and social problems. I don't think Lineker believes that or is saying that. To be clear, no I don't think the UK is heading for a genocidal event. Lineker tweeted "language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s". Naturally I’ll continue to pay my fare - but on Sundays going forward I’ll always wonder should I bother?Īs someone of Jewish descent, who lost family in the holocaust, I want to not only thank Gary Lineker for his comments, but to back them up too, with evidence. The youth said sorry and proceeded to wait for the other three of his group to do the same with other paying passengers - whilst staff watched. I challenged the youth in question and station staff looked amazed that I said anything. Then I arrived at my destination station only to have another passenger ‘jump’ through the gates on my ticket and hit the back of my shoes doing so. I would have rathered the gentlemen in question being able to approach someone at a station and say ‘hey - can I get some help’.īut the fact is that didn’t happen and this fare evader basically got discount for trying his luck. Maybe train companies need to make it more accessiable for those in need ‘not’ to take the chance. However something about not paying the fare disappointed me and I started to wonder why I am now expected to pay full fare… They have to weigh safety concerns for them, the train and also the well-being of the passenger affected. Guards I’m sure do this day in and day out. The police to be called to kick him off? A penalties notice to be issued? The guard ‘helped’ the person out by discounting it using a rail card that the traveller didn’t have and wrote a note so that the passenger could get past the gate. They could however pay close to the fare - about £30 in cash. However he did come across someone who couldn’t pay a fare. I was on a train today for about an hour. So this post might be unpopular but I’ve been thinking about it all day.
